For any one who suffers from panic attacks if they allow them to they can take control over their life. There are a number of things which one can do to prevent a panic attack happening. But should the situation become a chronic one then it may need to treated medically. Below we provide some tips on ways of how to stop panic attacks before they take complete control.

Tip 1 - A sensible way of stopping a panic attacks is to learn about breathing correctly. If you learn the right breathing techniques then you will find that you are able to relax far more quickly and easily. Today finding information on the various different breathing techniques and how to do them is very easy, just search online.

The simplest breathing technique used is where you sit in a quiet place and slowly begin to breathe in and out very deeply and slowly. The breathing is then helping to send messages around the body so it becomes relaxed and calm. As the body becomes more relaxed the production of adrenalin from the adrenal glands is reduced.

Tip 2 - It may take you some time before you are able to master this particular tip. In order to stop a panic attack one needs to learn how to remove all negative thoughts from one’s mind. So what you need to do if a panic attack starts is tell yourself that you can and will prevent it from escalating. Doing this wil help you to then get the situation under control and will help to make your mind more relaxed.

As soon as you stop having negative thoughts you now need to start replacing them with more positive ones. But you should not be thinking about lovely animals or beautiful sunshine. Instead your thoughts should be ones that further assert what you are already thinking. So you should be thinking things like what you have already done has provided the right response to the problem and then carry on with these.

Tip 3 - As soon as you feel a panic attack happening then move away from the source which has triggered it. It is important when having such feelings that you recognize what they are and then start to make changes. Even small changes will help you to avoid the same situations in the future or help you to deal with them more effectively.

by Matt Hellstrom

I’ve recently learned a trick on how to prevent stress. It’s simple and it works! Being a parent of a teenager is inherently stressful - I think the words teenager and stress are actually synonyms - and any way you can figure out how to prevent stress while dealing with them is a huge help.

So what works for me? Getting centered! No not walking down a straightline or straigtening out my clothes, at least not for me, but as you read on maybe this will work for you. In fact, everyone has their own personal way to get centered. Once you are able to identify your best ways to reduce stress or get centered, you will be on the road.

Where does stress come from?

In my opinion, our lives are spinning so quickly and are so intricate, that we quickly become out-of-control. It is in that place out-of-controlness that we become stressed. It doesn’t mean our whole life is off kilter, maybe just an area or two, like kids, health, money. But those areas can be just as if not more stressful than you can believe!

How about some stress reducing techniques?

Reducing stress is an indepth process. But handling it, is not so much. Getting centered is just such a way.

Tell me how to get centered.

It basically means to find a way to give yourself a sense of control over something in your life. It doesn’t have to be huge, trust me! It might not even be anything that is not in control, but just something you can have control over for that moment. It will do amazing things to your relieve your stress.

How do you get centered?

Figure out something that’s relaxing or soothing for you, and that gives you a sense of accomplishment when you get done. I have a couple of things I do to get centered - the main one is to mow the lawn. Now I know, most guys my age can hardly wait for their kids to get old enough to hand that job over to them, but as far as I’m concerned, they’ll never learn how to do it! Believe me, they’re not too bummed - they don’t get centered the same way I do. Anyway, I just love the feeling and the satisfaction of seeing that freshly mowed and edged lawn, with hardly a blade of grass out of place. It gets me centered.

Another technique of mine is making the bed. It’s my wife this time that doesn’t mind this quirk of mine. I love the look of a smooth, tightly made bed with the sheets and blankets tucked in perfectly. Ahhhh!

My wife’s method of how to prevent stress? To clean the sliding glass door. When she’s feeling out-of-control, she almost runs for the Windex and paper towels, and gets that baby so clean you could eat off of it. It’s her way of getting centered.

Separate those paper clips!

I know of a corporate bigwig who got centered by going through his paper clips and sorting the small ones from the large ones. When his secretary offered to do this mundane job for him, he politely declined. He knew this little secret kept him centered and at the top of his game!

That’s it! Told you it was simple. So the next time you can’t get a handle on things, figure out what you can do to get centered. And before you know it, you have your own ways of reducing stress.

Countless people are affected by Panic Attacks each year, causing immense panic and anxiety and a sense of fear. Dealing with Panic Attacks is quite challenging and some people are prisoners in their own home afraid to venture out. Identifying what triggers a Panic Attack is the first step in taking control of your panic disorder.

Signs of Panic Attacks

Panic attacks arrive without pre-warning and the person usually replies with a state of flight or fight. Some of the most common signs of panic attacks include the following:

- A feeling of intense panic and anxiety, often with extreme fear

- Pounding heart and chest pains

- Unsettled stomach and feeling faint

- Sweating, chills, or overheating

- Feeling unstable

- Restrictive breathing

- A yearning to escape

Panic Attack Triggers

With careful observation some panic attack triggers can be avoided. For people with a panic disorder this can provide a sense of liberty. Understanding panic attack triggers can help foresee when they will occur.

Trigger 1: Drinking Coffee

Caffeine increases your heart rate and makes you more alert. The increased heart rate can trigger an attack because it mimics the symptom of heart palpitations. Additionally, too much caffeine can cause trembling, another symptom of a panic attack.

Trigger 2: Certain Medications

It’s smart for people who suffer from panic disorder to shy away from medications that could cause a trigger for a panic attack. An example might be medication that could cause a rise in body temperature which inturn causes the heart rate to increase. Subsequently, the body may believe this to be a panic attack.

Trigger 3: Excessive Exercising

Exercise is another factor than can make experiencing a panic attack more likely. This is another case of the trigger mimicking the symptoms of a panic attack. When you exercise, you become short of breath, your heart rate increases, and you sweat.

Trigger 4: Tension

We all experience tension and stress in our lives. However, these feelings cause the body to fight or flight and can be a cause of panic attacks. Easy to say but harder to implement is lowering your stress levels.

Trigger 5: Major Life Change

Experiencing major changes in one’s life in a short space of time can through your whole system out of whack. Changing jobs, moving house or losing a loved one has an effect on you emotionally and physically. Having a strong support network is critical during these times.

Having watched the presidential and vice presidential debates, and having an interest in stress, I started to wonder about the effects of this debate on the four people on the two tickets. Sarah Palin, John McCain, Barack Obama, and Joe Biden are the four contenders experiencing the stress. But what about the stress during the televised debates?

At stake in the debates is the possibility that they might win or lose voter’s support. For anyone who has debated, the constant strain is saying something ridiculous. The two elements for debating are content and presentation and one must be expert in both areas.

The four people on the two tickets all have different personal styles. You can be sure that in the background there were many public speaking experts coaching our four contenders. The requirement to adapt and become an adept speaker in a short timeframe must be a burden. How must each person change?

Barack Obama has the potential to be too distant and theoretical. This is not an appealing feature on the campaign trail when Middle America is looking for someone who is connected, down-to-earth, and like them. He has used the theme of change as his way of reaching everyone, especially the disaffected and the young.

John McCain has had a long term as a prisoner of war but this is not sufficient for many people. In fact, the danger is that they might see him as a war hawk when in fact he wants to be seen as a committed patriot. His age and medical condition are two factors which cause his team some anxiety as they try to downplay these potential limitations.

Joe Biden has the constant tension of having a huge amount of experience and has the pressure of trying to present this accurately and in a digestible way. Some pundits suggest that Joe is too arrogant. Voters like to think that their politicians are like themselves and this is Joe’s pressure.

Sarah Palin has to impress voters as having a national and international presence not simply as being a mom from middle America. Being able to say folksy words like ‘doggone’ and ‘aint’ might add down-home appeal but they limit her status as a high-level politician. Because she made such a bad showing at some televised interviews, the pressure for her was to appear well-informed.

The ever present stress during the debates for the four nominees was to limit any presumed weaknesses and present an attractive persona. Both personal weaknesses and information deficiencies were the areas that caused the strain for the four on these important tickets. America’s voters watching the debates are the best ones to know how well they handled the debating stress and presented effectively in terms of information and style.

by Dr Jeff Bailey

While we hear accounts of more than 4000 US soldiers killed in the Iraq war to date, the number of returning veterans who suffer from post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) numbers in the tens of thousands. A result of the constant conflict, anxiety, and daily threats of death PTSD has been referred to in many ways: Shell shock, combat fatigue, and battle fatigue. Post-Vietnam syndrome is the expression that was used as a result of the Vietnam conflict.

There are well-defined characteristics of PTSD. The major problem relates to unremitting flashbacks with accompanying senses of distress and physical unease. Very few people are able to manage these recurring symptoms.

Imagine having to replay day after day terrifying and disturbing scenes. Some people don’t realise that they have PTSD until they start to have nightmares at night and cannot sleep and feel refresh the next day. When they go to work feeling tired and irritable, their concentration is negatively affected and their work productivity is interfered with dramatically.

Being tired and irritable is one part of the equation but there are personality changes as well. Being short tempered, snappy, distant and unaffectionate are typical correlates of PTSD. These changes often impact negatively on relationships with loved ones.

From a neurological point of view, PTSD causes significant problems in terms of our ability to focus and maintain attention in an effective way. The major reason is that the individual experiencing PTSD is so emotionally preoccupied that there is limited reasoning capacity. In a sense, the brain is so flooded with negative emotions that it is almost impossible to be an effective problem solver.

If you knew how many people experienced PTSD, you would be amazed. Something in the order of 8% of people in the US experience stress at a level and for a length of time that can be extremely dysfunctional. And stress and PTSD do not respect gender or race.

Despite the high figures of stress and PTSD, many people are able to cope with their daily lives and manage stress effectively. They have learned effective strategies to reduce stress by identifying the stressors and finding ways to understand and alleviate the tension and anxiety. The problem is, of course, if people cannot manage stress effectively it will impact negatively many areas of their life.

We have to accept in our fast society that being tense and anxious is a normal part of life. We all have complex lives that present us with daily challenges to our emotional equilibrium. The real issue is to be able to manage stress and tension so that we do not become tense and irritable and lose the social support from our loved ones that are so central in having a stable and happy life.

The issue is not whether we experience stress - the real issue is how we manage stress. Stress management is not a complex science. It is a matter of knowing ourselves (self-awareness), understanding our impact on others (social perspective) and being able to communicate effectively with our colleagues and loved ones so that we reduce the threats, challenges, tension, and stress.

The best way to start to manage and reduce stress is to gain as much information as possible about this syndrome. Knowing the stressors and how to deal with them is an essential first step - whether it is a serious psychological condition like PTSD - or a less debilitating but still worrisome disorder - elevated stress. Once you know you enemy - then you know how to manage stress and overcome the worry and anxiety.

by Dr Jeff Bailey

Many people worry about whether they are stressed. This often occurs because their partners tell them that they are stressed out. When you hear words like relax and cool it, you start to worry that you are stressed. Do you know what causes stress and anxiety?

If your stress levels are being commented on, friends and families might see you as a tense and stressed individual. Of course, this might be your personality or personal style. You might think that other people are far too relaxed, even sloppy in their attitudes. Whereas you are well-organized, responsible, efficient, and let’s face it - uptight!

There are many tests that purport to measure personality. The Myer-Briggs, the most commonly used test in industry, has the dimensions sensing, feeling, judging, introversion etc. The most relevant characterization of stress and anxiety came from an American cardiologist, Milton Friedman who determined there were two personality types - Type A (uptight, driven) and Type B (calm, relaxed). The issue for Friedman was whether the Type A person was likely to be one of his prime candidates for cardiac surgery. No one wants to be THAT stressed.

When you are frightened or stressed, your body pumps adrenaline or cortisol to prepare you to react effectively. The stimulus is called a stressor. The stressor is designed to activate your system to respond quickly.

What stressors cause you the most problem? A typical list includes complex and high paced lifestyle, boredom, financial difficulties, and relationship problems. Perhaps there are health problems in your family that worry you. Perhasps your relationship is breaking down?

Some people enjoy the positive benefits that stress produces. A small amount of tension for a short period of time can make us more productive and effective. The problem arises when the stress levels are high and they last for a long time. What are stress triggers? The stimulus that sets off your stress.

Consider yourself in the workplace. If you have new challenges and demands and especially if there is a tight timeline you might feel stimulated and excited. Your stress levels will be elevated but if you are in control you might enjoy this extra pressure. What this means is that some stress can produce positive outcomes.

When stress is negative, we talk about being stressed out, over-stressed, even burnt out. In these instances, the stressor is far too great for us to respond in a positive and effective way. Our body responds with headaches, stomach upsets, elevated heart rate and blood pressure. Some people get blotchy skin and rashes. Some get ulcers, heart disease and even suffer strokes or die. From a psychological point of view, typical responses to chronic stress include anxiety, phobias, diminished self-assurance, dysthymia (mild depression), clinical depression, anger, obsessive thought disorders and, unfortunately, thoughts of suicide.

Unfortunately very few people have been lucky enough to be taught practical and effective stress management strategies. In order to be able to reduce the stress in our lives, we need information and strategies. Both must have an evidence base so that we are reading accurate information and using well proven and effective strategies for stress management and reduction.

The primary thing that is necessary to be known to cure anxiety and panic attacks is to understand what causes them. The most common triggers of panic attacks include stress, food consumption and other individuals in some cases. These causes ought to be taken into account when one wants to find out what steps can be taken to keep to keep panic attacks from happening later.

Most commonly, stress is one of the major contributors to panic attacks. Stress is a factor that shows up in everyone’s life. It can spring from family events, work events or just from weariness after having too many activities. When the anxiety increases a panic attack can be triggered. This happens because the stress becomes too intense for a person to handle. Often the stress will come about because an incredibly high amount of things need to be done in a shorter period of time. Learning about the things that cause stress will be necessary when one is working to get rid of anxiety and panic attacks.

Next, eating habits can be an important factor. In many cases one’s diet can easily influence one’s life in that it will make it easier for them to suffer panic attacks. For instance, alcohol and caffeine use can be a problem. Sometimes these drugs can cause one’s sleep habits to be significantly impacted. A person can end up having a hard time sleeping or will find himself rising later than what the person was planning to get up. Because of this the pressure of functioning will be elevated or the person will be tired and because of this stress levels will rise.

Also, when it comes to one’s diet it helps to keep one fed at an appropriate schedule. One of the causes of panic attacks deals with the blood sugar levels that one has. When a person has not eaten for a longer period of time blood sugar levels will drop and as a result the body will be more susceptible to stress and anxiety.

Other people can be contributors to panic attacks. Avoiding certain people can help but for a long term solution, talk with those people in order to get the problems to be taken care of so that no anxiety will be built up in the concern. A few reasons why other people can cause panic attacks include pressures that others put onto the person who has panic attacks and extreme amounts of competition with the panic attack victim.

The causes of panic attacks are crucial to understand when one is struggling to cure anxiety and panic attacks. These factors include stress, diet and competitive or high-pressure people. Being attentive to these problems can help to get a person to be able to have a significantly reduced level of stress in the future.

Scientific research into the reasons for a panic attack show that a large percentage of those who are likely to experience a panic attack carry the gene dubbed DUP25. This article has been written with the intention to show panic attack sufferers that there are options available to them in dealing with these incidents.

It’s important you know what the main panic attack symptoms are and be able to recognize if you are having one. Chest pains and problems breathing are symptoms that panic attack sufferers complain of. Other symptoms include a dizzy feeling and increased heart rate which then turns into a fear that something really bad is about to occur. Moreover, when all these things happen, it triggers a worsening cycle of panic attack.

Many sufferers feel that the chest pains are in indication that there are about to have a heart attack and this often triggers the panic attack. Frequency and intensity of panic attacks will determine what panic attack medication the physician is going to prescribe you.

There is also nothing unusual for a panic attack victim to feel that they have lost touch with reality. As a sufferer, if you experience anything like this you should contact your doctor immediately. My most recent panic attack happened on the way to work when I must have been subconsciously thinking about work that needed doing that I wasn’t very confident about.

By avoiding situations which could bring on a panic attack, sticking to healthy eating habits and exercise n a regular basis, you are likely to reduce the chances of a panic episode. A short term solution is by using medication specifically designed to reduce the symptoms of a panic attack.

While a number of attacks can usually be controlled by the sufferer, there are those severe anxiety attacks that require medication which would have to be prescribed by your doctor. Natural Homeopathic and Herbal Remedies are available for many health conditions including natural treatments for anxiety and anxiety attack treatments. Other natural remedies to help stop anxiety attacks are simpler and rely on the use of music, yoga and exercise.

When looking for a long term solution for panic attack symptoms, you cannot rely on pills, antidepressants or other chemical solutions.

Anxiety is becoming more prevalent in our modern world. We the new stresses of the economy, the sources of anxiety are increasing. Sometimes, we do not even know why we feel this anxiety. Our bodies have been genetically programmed to respond in certain ways. When we are hit with anxiety, we may start to sweat, have short breaths, or even have chest pain. The symptoms can vary, but the anxiety builds up. We need effective ways to relieve this anxiety build up. One very effective treatment is massage chair therapy.

Massage has been cited in many studies to provide an effective method to reduce anxiety and also stress hormones in the body. These studies are generally for non-chronic forms of anxiety. Massage is very effective in getting our mind off the problems at hand. It provides us a relaxing environment and helps to free our minds of these thoughts causing and sustaining the anxiety. Of course, it is always recommended to discuss your situation with your medical advisor and see what is right for you.

Massage targets your muscles, tendons and skin directly and your mind indirectly. By the subtle manipulation of your soft tissue, your body begins to relax.
Massage chairs have full body massage capabilities. They provide effective massage therapy to your back, neck and shoulder areas. They have air massage systems that provide compression massage therapy to your extremities and lower body. These massage therapies are very soothing. You can target specific areas and concentrate on them for longer periods until you get the relief you want.

Got Stress? Welcome to the modern world and our new economy. It is hard to imagine in our current times that we will not be under stress. The current economic crises and now our response to it must put unprecedented stress on our bodies. When you are under stress your muscles will tense up, breathing is increased, heart rate is picked up as we poise to deal with the situation at hand. Afterwards, a nice jaunt to the day spa would work. So you too, don’t have time, then consider coming home to a massage chair recliner.

Our response is biologically programmed and unconscious. Our bodies kick into pure survival mode, like when that saber-toothed tiger jumped out of the bush. We are ready to fight or take flight. With the dawning of the new economy our stress is psychological and not physical. Unfortunately, our bodies do not make the distinction. Our bodies release major amounts of chemicals to ensure short term survival. Trouble is, we need to flush those chemicals out of our bodies.

Now, we are not going to be able to avoid stress, but we can learn to counteract it. We need to have a means to reverse the stress building process. Call this a relaxation response. This would be a state of deep relaxation which would be the opposite of the stress. The relaxation response would bring the body back into balance, reduce the stress chemical release and slow down the muscles and organs.

One way to kick up your relaxation a notch or two is with massage therapy. Come on, a massage helps you relax and unwind. The peace of mind is priceless. And of course, let us not forget about our muscles are being worked over ever so nicely. Like getting an invigorating shiatsu massage. Perhaps a little deep kneading on the shoulders. Followed by some rapid tapping action to loosen up and invigorate your back muscles. I am getting more relaxed just thinking about it.

Let us take a quick look at two of the most important massage therapy techniques. Swedish massage and Shiatsu massage. These are different schools of through with slightly different benefit sets. Swedish massage uses a variety of 6 techniques to relax and energize the muscles and the body. Shiatsu massage uses a combination of acupressure, kneading and rapid chopping to invigorate the muscles increasing blood and lymph flow, while increasing mental awareness.

Now these two techniques have been masterfully reproduced by modern technology. Welcome to the new age of the machine! Top companies like Panasonic, Omega, Human Touch and Sanyo have massage chairs that provide these massage therapies and many more. They have acupressure, reflexology, deep tissue, sports massage. They also got you covered from head to toe. Stress has met its balancing partner with the touch of a button.

Massage techniques are just part of these new generation massage chairs. You can find heat therapy or muscles stretching and even music. After all, music helps you to relax your mind. If your mind relaxes, your body then has a chance. Best of all for a massage chair is it is always waiting and available. Effective stress relief must occur on a periodic basis, just like the events that are causing you stress. Got Stress? Find your new balance of harmony in the new economy with a massage chair recliner.
